Mac OS 8.1 CD upgrade: an apparent glitch to getting it if you own a G3 Mac is solved

The Mac OS 8.1 CD will include a full OS install capability (as opposed to just an ability to update an existing Mac OS 8.0 System Folder, which is what will be available free on the Web). If you currently own Mac OS 8.0, you can get this CD for only $19.95. However, as explained on an Apple web page, proof of purchase requires "the combination of a clear photocopy of Mac OS 8 CD and the original back cover of your manual."

Simple enough. However, as pointed out by several readers, the new G3 Macs (although they ship with Mac OS 8) do not come with a printed Mac OS 8 manual. Incredibly, reader Marjorie Kichline was told by Apple that this means that they may not be able to get 8.1 at the upgrade price: "I've phoned Apple's Corporate Office about this, and the best they could do is tell me to call them back after OS 8.1 is released, and they would see what they could do."

Update: Ed Floden writes: "According the the document on Proof of Purchase Requirements, the POP for G3s is the 'Original back cover from Emergency Handbook, 034-0292-A', which is shipped with a G3. At least, mine had one." (Also noted by Chaz Larson and Chad Gilloth; thanks).
