LibMoto problems: Myth and beyond

CNET staff
Luke Hamburg received email from a Bungie employee concerning problems with LibMoto that affect Myth (as well as any other program that uses MathLib functions). To make a somewhat long story short, the Bungie rep claimed that current versions of LibMoto will produce incorrect results. How does this apply to Myth? Myth uses MathLib routines to "initialize a bunch of tables when it starts up." With LibMoto installed, errors will occur that may result in synchronization problems during network play. The solution?: versions of MathLib in the latest 8.x versions of the Mac OS are nearly as fast as LibMoto and do not produce these errors.

Update: This problem also affects Carmageddon, resulting in strangely drawn graphics. (Thanks, Ron Guest and Matt Morris.)

Update: A new TIL file explains that Mac OS 8.1 comes with MathLib v3. However some Macs (including PowerBook 2400, 3400 and G3) load v2 from ROM and will not use the new version. The new version "provides a higher degree of accuracy." Apple expects to address this in a future release.
