LG G2 confirmed as flagship ditches Optimus name

LG has confirmed the long-awaited G2, in the process revealing it's ditching the Optimus name for premium phones.

LG confirmed the G2 would be its next flagship smart phone, and the first of a premium range to be branded with just a G. But the company for whom life is good stopped short of offering any details about the G2, or even when we could expect it.

That said, LG, which recently celebrated flogging 10m 4G phones, has invited press to a mystery mobile-related launch event in New York on 7 August.

Word on the street is that the G2 will sport a large 5.5-inch 1080p screen, with a 2.3GHz Snapdragon 800 processor and Adreno 330 graphics chip inside, plus 2GB of RAM and a 13-megapixel camera.

Up until now, LG phones like the LG Optimus L5 II and the original LG Optimus G bore the Transformers-recalling moniker, but that's going away with the G2.

LG is hanging on to the Vu name, however, for its line-up of 4:3 smart phones. The original LG Optimus Vu was a 5-inch, 4:3 phone, but never came to these shores.
