Kernel panics with Giga Designs processor upgrade; conflict with SCSI card

CNET staff

MacFixIt reader David reports that he discovered a conflict between the Adaptec 2930CU SCSI adapter and a 1.2 GHz processor upgrade from GigaDesigns that was causing kernel panics. Simply removing the SCSI card temporarily resolved the issue:

"With some help from Jason at Gigadesigns, I was able to solve the kernel panic attacks I was having with my 2001 Quicksilver, running OSX10.3.4, and Gigadesigns 1.2Ghz Dual upgrade.

"Typically, from a cold start, the computer would function perfectly for as long as I was working on it. But, when I put it to sleep, and then woke it up to work on it, I would get a kernel panic within 10-20 minutes of use. Sometimes it would happen immediately when it woke it up, sometimes not until 20 minutes in. But, regardless, it would happen.

"After speaking with Jason of Gigadesigns, and upping the voltage of the card per his recommendation, I reviewed the panic.log on my computer. Found out that every occurrence had mention of my Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card that shipped with my computer from Apple.

"Turns out, once I removed the card that my computer is now in perfect working order."
