Browser problem Two readers (Dave R. and Robert Bell) have reported getting freezes/crashes in Web browsers after installing the release version of Kaleidoscope 2.0. Problems went away when Kaleidoscope 2.0 was disabled.
Gregory Landweber (author of Kaleidoscope) replies: "Several users are reporting crashes in Microsoft Internet Explorer when using the Scherzo scheme, and the problem appears to go away if they switch to any other scheme. However, this does not seem to happen to everyone. I have not confirmed any freezes or crashes in Netscape."

Schemes folder Reader Rob writes: "When installing Kaleidoscope 2.0, by default the installer places an alias for the schemes folder in the Apple Menu Items folder inside the System folder. If your current Schemes folder is already in that folder, the installer will create the alias and overwrite the original with the alias! Work-around: first move the Schemes folder out of the Apple Menu Items folder, run the installer, and then put Schemes folder wherever you like."

Gregory replies: "We will fix this in the next release."

Registration glitch From the MRP: "I isolated the extension (under Mac OS 8.1) which causes Kaleidoscope 2.0 to crash when one tries to enter a name to register: the Speech Manager extension (version 1.4, part of Text-to-Speech 1.5)." The work-around: keep Speech Manager disabled until after you register. A fix is coming.

Gregory replies: "Here are two simpler workarounds:
1. Avoid clicking in the Kaleidoscope control panel's Register window. Use the <tab> key to move between the text fields and press <return> instead of clicking the Register button. The problem happens whenever you click the mouse, so everything is fine if you do not click.
2. Temporarily disable your extensions (start with the <shift> key down) when you enter your registration code. That is simpler than hunting down and disabling the Speech Manager extension individually. This problem is specific to that one dialog box, so as long as you aren't entering a registration code, you can continue to use the Speech Manager."
