John Oliver, Martin Sheen celebrate end of the world (with a Segway)
Technically incorrect: In the event that monsters or aliens finally get us, a comedian and a former TV president get together to create a piece that lauds all that man has achieved. Yes, the Segway is in there.
Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that's taken over our lives.
In an idle moment or a meeting that makes you want to strangle half its participants, you surely wonder what would happen if it all ended now.
What if aliens finally came down to put us out of our misery? What if we fracked away so hard that the Earth split in two, both halves wafting into deep space, never to be seen again?
On his show last night, John Oliver considered this and wondered whether we should at least prepare a video to celebrate everything we have achieved, rather than lament our monstrous shortcomings.
He'd been moved by the discovery that CNN wanted to play out the world's end with a marching band. So he co-opted former television president Martin Sheen to create a piece that was more worthy of our noble efforts.
After all, we managed to harness fire and invented languages. And then there was the Segway. Yes, man's one step ahead of walking with one step ahead of another.
We managed to become top animal, while still being enthralled by cat videos (naturally, there's one here).
As well as the Segway and cat videos, the night sky, the pyramids, the yo-yo and the car make an appearance. Einstein, string theory and moon rockets also take their place among our greatest hits.
The smartphone, the iPad and all the other little gadgets to which we've become umbilically attached? Nowhere to be seen.
And the last thing we see before we disappear, perhaps never to be remembered? Oh, it's a slam dunk, that one.
