John McAfee hires former Guatemalan attorney general, wants to meet with Belize
The 67-year-old antivirus-software pioneer turned fugitive retains Telesforo Guerra, who happens to be the uncle of his 20-year-old girlfriend, to help him set up a meeting with the prime minister of Belize.
In another twist to John McAfee's wild story of life on the run, the antivirus-software pioneer has hired the former attorney general of Guatamala -- who also happens to be his girlfriend's uncle -- to help him as he tries to set up a meeting with the prime minister of Belize on "neutral ground."
McAfee posted this latest update to his blog today, adding another chapter to the tale of the tech entrepreneur turned fugitive. McAfee was one of the pioneers in creating antivirus software and is the founder of the company that bears his name -- but he hasn't had anything to do with the company in more than a decade.
McAfee reiterated his innocence in today's blog post, and described his new lawyer, Telesforo Guerra, as "one of the most prominent attorneys in Guatemala," who is "well versed in the intricate system of corruption with the Belizean Government."
His post also included an offer to meet with the Belize prime minister:
To the Prime Minister of Belize I make the following offer: I will agree to meet you in a neutral country to discuss our mutual issues. It is entirely possible that you have little or no knowledge of the level of corruption being propagated throughout every branch of your government. I will turn over to you thousands of hours of video and audio as proof, providing that we meet as gentlemen and are mutually convinced of our honesty.
The 67-year-old fled from Belize to Guatamala with his 20-year-old girlfriend while police in Belize sought him for questioning in relation to the death of his neighbor Gregory Faull. Faull was found last month shot dead days after he filed a complaint about McAfee to municipal officials in Ambergris Caye, a tropical island just off the coast of Belize.
"To the family of Gregory Faul [sic]: I had nothing to do with his death," McAfee wrote in his blog. "I have lost five close family members in my 67 years and I know your suffering."
McAfee's location in Guatamala was revealed yesterday when a post from Vice Magazine, which currently has reporters following McAfee on his trip, included a photo with metadata attached.
