Jobs named interim CEO; Up-to-Date partially restored

An Apple press release says it all: "At its first regularly scheduled meeting last week, Apple's new Board of Directors formalized the role of Steve Jobs by naming him interim Chief Executive Officer of the Company until a new CEO is named. The Board expects that a new CEO will be named before the end of the year."

Steve was already behaving as if he were the CEO, so why not give him the official title? Seems only right to me. Will Steve eventually be named the permanent CEO? Your guess is as good as mine. Based on previous statements Steve has made expressing his lack of interest in the position, I would have to guess no. But, given the way things have been changing at Apple recently, prior statements and commitments don't seem to carry much weight these days. Reminds me of the old Firesign Theater motto: "Everything you know is wrong."

Update: In a related announcement, "Guerrino De Luca, Apple's executive vice president of Marketing, has resigned."

Another Apple press release notes that the Mac OS Up-to-Date program has been restored for Power Computing and UMAX computers.
