Java Update 1.4.2 Update 1: More positive reports; installation issues

Yesterday we noted Apple's release of Java Update 1.4.2 Update 1, as well as a reader report that a Java-based site that previously didn't work under OS X worked after installing the update. Reader Lawrence Krupp provides another positive report:

"My bank uses a commercial Java application called View One to display canceled checks online. View One is a Java based document viewer. View One never worked at all on any of my Mac's until the release of Java 1.4.1 and Safari 1.2 when Live Connect was again supported. Then, after the release of Panther 10.3.4 and/or Java 1.4.2 it all quit working again. Now, with the release of 10.3.5, Safari 1.2.3, and Java 1.4.2 Update 1 the ViewOne application is working better than ever, much faster than before too."

Installation issues We've received a few reports of issues where attempting to install Java Update 1.4.2 Update 1 results in OS X's Installer utility reporting an error that you first need to install Java 1.4.1 (even though it's already installed). This is actually an older issue we covered when Java 1.4.2 was released. There are two possible solutions:

  • Download the Java 1.4.1 installer from the Apple website, install it, and then install Java Update 1.4.1 Update 1.
    or
  • Follow this procedure:
    1. If the Installer application is open, quit it.
    2. From the Finder's Go menu, choose Go to Folder.
    3. Type: /Library/Receipts and then click Go.
    4. Move the package file "QuickTimeJavaUpdate.pkg" to the Desktop.
    5. Install Java Update 1.4.2 Update 1.
    6. After installation, move QuickTimeJavaUpdate.pkg back into /Library/Receipts.
