Problems launching Several readers have reported an issue where iTunes 7.4 fails to launch.

One reader writes:

"When I try to open iTunes the registration screen pops as usual after upgrade but within a second it disappears and a Apple report shows up."

Another reader adds:

"After updating my iTunes 7.3 to 7.4 iTunes when clicked on either in the applications folder or in the dock will bounce up and down once and then stop. Nothing loads!"

If you are experiencing problems launching iTunes 7.4 after updating and are using Application Enhancer (APE) and ShapeShifter, try the following:

  1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu
  2. Click on the Application Enhancer Preference Pane located in the "Other" section.
  3. Disable ShapeShifter and save your preferences
  4. Restart your Mac
  5. Re-install iTunes 7.3
  6. If iTunes launches successfully after re-installation, you can try re-enabling ShapeShifter from the APE System Preferences pane.

Failing the above, try excluding iTunes 7.3 from APE's effects via these steps:

  1. Open System Preferences
  2. Click on the Application Enhancer Preference Pane located in the "Other" section.
  3. Select Application Enhancer at the top of the haxie list.
  4. Once selected, there will be a tab entitled "Master Exclude List" - select the "Master Exclude List" tab.
  5. Use the plus ( ) sign at the bottom of the window to open a navigation window. Navigate to iTunes, which located in /Applications. Select iTunes to add it to the Master Exclude List.

then re-launch iTunes.

Alternatively, problematic plug-ins may be to blame. Try removing any third-party plug-ins from the folder:

  • ~/Library/iTunes/iTunes Plug-ins

then re-launch iTunes.

Problems synchronizing with iPods Several users have reported problems syncing their iPods after updating to iTunes 7.4.

MacFixIt reader AJ writes:

"Since upgrading to iTunes 7.4 this morning it is acting very strange, it upgraded the library but it won´t sync on my iPod 4G. It just freezes up. It works wonderfully as long as the iPod is not mounted. It takes forever to force quit it, I have to do it several times until it quits, Activity Monitor won´t see it as running."

Jan adds:

"When connecting the nano to the USB, the iPod starts to charge, but iTunes doesn't launch, and I have no way to sync the nano."

In some cases this can be fixed by rebuilding the iTunes Library. The steps are simple and are outlined in two Apple Knowledge Base articles:

In other cases, the only resolution to this problem is downgrading to iTunes 7.3. Delete the following files:

  • The iTunes 7.4 application (located in /Applications)
  • com.apple.iTunes.plist (from ~/Library/Preferences)
  • iTunes.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)
  • iTunesX.pkg (from /Library/Receipts)

Then download and re-install iTunes 7.3.
