Problems installing A number of users are reporting problems installing iTunes 7.1, with installation either failing partway through or stalling indefinitely.

MacFixIt reader K. Fleischman writes:

"After downloading the system stops before completion of the installation and I have to do a full reset of the software update program."

Another reader adds:

"My G4 15" 1.25 Al Powerbook is having problems installing the upgrade, a G5 in my office installed and worked fine. On the PowerBook the installer is stuck:

Yet another reader writes:

"Installation of iTunes 7.1 failed several times on my iMac 1.25 GHz Power PC G4 on OSX 10.3.9"

If you are having this problem, first ensure that no other applications are running and no other processes being performed while installation is taking place. You may want to open Activity Monitor (located in Applications/Utilities) and kill any active processes that may be interfering with the install.

In some cases, this issue can be resolved by navigating to the folder /Library/Receipts (the Library folder at the root level of your startup drive) and removing the iTunes.pkg package then re-running Software Update or re-attempting installation from the standalone download.

In other cases, one solution is to re-apply of the Mac OS X 10.4.8 combo updater (PowerPC or Intel), then re-attempt installation.

Podcast issues MacFixIt reader James Hess reports an issue with downloading and playing podcasts after applying the iTunes 7.1 update. He writes:

"After upgrading to iTunes 7.1, my podcasts will no longer play."

If you are having problems listening to or viewing some podcasts after the update to iTunes 7.1, try unsubscribing then re-subscribing to them. Doing so can sometimes correct links that somehow become faulty in the update process.

Distortion lines through album covers in Cover Flow Some users are reporting lines of distortion running through album covers in full screen Cover Flow mode.

One reader writes:

"Updated to iTunes 7.1. Only problem I seem to have is while in 'Full Screen Cover Flow' the artwork cover has a hairline black rule going right through entire the image. The rule goes from the top left hand corner to the bottom right hand corner. A bit annoying. Happens in every cover."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Windows PCs unable to access streaming media on Macs Some users are unable to gain access to shared music on Macs from Windows PCs on the same network after updating to iTunes 7.1.

MacFixIt reader Jeff writes:

"After I installed iTunes 7.1, my Windows PCs stopped being able to see my Airport Express to stream music to. My Mac seems unaffected by the update."

If you are experiencing this issue, make sure that all systems -- both Windows and Mac -- have been updated to iTunes 7.1. Differing versions of iTunes can exhibit difficulty streaming shared media to one another.
