Some users with satellite-based Internet connections are reporting problems purchasing media from the iTunes store.

One reader writes:

"Since upgrading to iTunes 7 podcast and purchased music downloads fail with network connection reset. I have an older PowerBook with iTunes 6.0.5 that does not experience the problem. I have found that my Satellite internet connection is suspect. There is a problem that Apple has acknowledged with software update. I have to delete the cache files before running software update. Apparently Apple is now using the "Software update" download routines in iTunes 7, which can not deal with the latency of a satellite internet connection.

MacFixIt reader Jerry writes:

"I also have problems with iTunes 7.0 and Quicktime 7.1.3 on Hughes Satellite Internet Service. Downloading Movie trailers are very flaky (shows Quicktime icon with question mark inside) taking numerous tries both with iTunes and also directly from Apple's trailers site. I have been able to download iTunes music without problems. Behaves vary similar to Software Update where its Cache has to be deleted before it will work without a '1011' error. Have had some success viewing movie trailers, both in iTunes and Apples trailer site by changing Quicktime Preferences, Advanced setting tab from Automatic to Custom and selecting RTSP Port ID to 7070. Satellite latency and Apples 'timeout settings' seem to be the problem. Latency is a known problem with Software Update. Also restarting Satellite Modem DW7000 sometimes works for a while. I've also found Firefox works much better than Safari with Satellite. Had to continually empty Safari's cache to get pages to load properly."

MacFixIt reader Elizabeth writes:

"I too am having problems with downloading media from iTunes 7.0 with a satellite internet connection. I was trying to download two movies yesterday, and it downloaded one movie, but stopped after that. I had to go back to the music store and ask it to download the second movie again. After two tries I got it to download successfully. I have Wildblue satellite internet access and it has a particularly long latency period. I have a 15" PowerBook G4."

In some cases this issue can be temporarily resolved by clearing caches with a utility like like Cocktail, Mac Pilot or Tiger Cache Cleaner.
