iTunes 7.0.2 (#2): Language/country erroneously switched; Problems playing podcasts; more

Language/country erroneously switched Several readers have reported an issue where, after updating to iTunes 7.0.2, the preferred language for the iTunes Store is switched to one other than originally specified by the user.

Despite the coincidence with the release of iTunes 7.0.2, this may be a server-side issue that Apple will need to resolve on its end. This is evidenced by the fact that some readers still using iTunes 7.0.1 are also seeing their preferred languages switched.

One MacFixIt reader writes:

"Now when I go  to the iTunes store, most things are in German. I now have German podcasts. I don't speak German. Never did. Never installed German translators in the system either."

Scott Mahrer adds:

"I was surprised to discover that when I opened iTunes 7.0.1 this morning that the Music Store had switched to Switzerland! This, I believe, may have been caused by a major revamp of the Music Store itself, and not the upgrade (since I have not upgraded yet)."

Billy Chase writes:

"After upgrading all prices for song at the itunes store are in French."

Fix In many cases, this issue can be permanently resolved by logging into your iTunes Store account, at which point you should prompted with the message "Your account is only valid for the (name of previously used country) Store." You can then click OK and be taken to the proper Store.

Alternatively, just go to the iTunes Store (from the left-hand navigation bar), then scroll to the bottom then select the appropriate store from the "My Store" menu.

Problems playing podcasts Meanwhile, some users report problems playing podcasts after the update to iTunes 7.0.2.

Jay Sokolow writes:

"After the iTunes update, my most recent podcast downloads won't play. If I click on the actual file, they will play in iTunes, but they won't play in the itunes window and they get skipped when in a playlist. I don't seem to have a problem with music files. I'm using MacBook, 10.4.8, iTunes 7.0.2."

Although it is a kludgy workaround, you can drag the afflicted podcasts out of the iTunes window and onto the Desktop or another location in the Finder, then use QuickTime Player to open the file (control-click [right-click] the file and choose "Open With..." then QuickTime Player). It should play properly from within QuickTime.

Slow podcast/media download issues For the past few days, we've been reporting on issues with slow downloading of podcasts and media from the iTunes store under iTunes 7.0.1. Most of these issues appear to persist in iTunes 7.0.2.

Note that in many cases, the problems (when restricted to specific podcasts) are a result of bandwidth limitations on the server (outside Apple) delivering the audio file.

One reader writes:

"Jim Cramer's radio show is brutally slow.  However, it's been slow for a long time (month). I think it is related to where they store their podcasts and not having the proper bandwidth on the server."

Johnny Ring writes:

"Sometimes I can't download podcast at all. The download will often start but after a few seconds it stops and I get an exclamation mark to the left of the podcast. This happens with all the current podcast I subscribe to (dl.tv, MacBreak, Photoshop TV, GeekBrief.TV, Photoshop Killer Tips and TWIT)."

Repair Permissions after update Although they may well be innocuous, several users are reporting permissions errors implicating iTunes after applying the 7.0.2 update. As such, it's not a bad idea to open Disk Utility (located in Applications/Utilities) and repair permissions after installing the update.

MacFixit reader Jay Kappmeier writes:

"Beginning with iTunes 7.0, I noticed that permissions needed to be corrected after installation.  In previous versions of iTunes, the ?Repair Permissions? function of Disk Utility would run without having to correct any permissions.  Not so with iTunes 7.0.x.   I don?t know if permission issues are causing the current iTunes 7.0.1 slow down problem, but it may be worth the time it takes to repair permissions after installation.  "
