iTunes 6.0.5 (#3): Issues with playback; Reverting to iTunes 6.0.4; more

Issues with playback Some users are reporting issues with playback -- particularly audible distortion -- after updating to iTunes 6.0.5.

A poster to the MacFixIt Forums, vvness, writes:

"Since upgrading to iTunes 6.0.5 and Quicktime 7.1.2, many selections (and sometimes whole albums) either refuse to play or play with severely distorted sound (as if the EQ settings are not correct or are being badly misread). When playing, even songs that "don't play", the diamond in the playback indicator bar at the top continues to move through the song normally while it's "playing".

"Corrupted playback sound ranges from no sound at all, to assorted clicks and pops, to the weird EQ sound. The problem has affected apparently random MP3, .m4a and .aiff and Applelossless files So far I haven't identified anything in common, but am still looking. Deleting the iTunes and Quicktime preference plist files has had no effect."

Reverting to iTunes 6.0.4 If you are experiencing issues like the one above, or other significant problems with version 6.0.5 of iTunes, you may consider reverting to version 6.0.4.

Unfortunately, Apple does not maintain downloadable editions of previous iTunes iterations. A Web site called "OldApps" does, however.

The following steps should be used for downgrading to iTunes 6.0.4:

1. Download iTunes 6.0.4 from the OldApps Web site.

2. Remove the following files:

• the iTunes 6.0.5 application (located in /Applications)
• /Library/Receipts/iTunesX.pkg
• ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iTunes.plist

3. Run the iTunes 6.0.4 installer.

Try re-installing standalone QuickTime Some playback issues can be resolved by re-installing the current QuickTime standalone installer.
