iTunes 2.0.4 is out. There are two versions: iTunes 2.0.4 for Mac OS X and iTunes 2.0.4 for Mac OS 9. It offers more AppleScript features, and improved stability and performance. It also includes a new version of iPod Help, accessible from Help Center, or from iTunes' Help menu. iTunes 2.0.4 includes Help on the features of iPod 1.1, so it is important to download both.

Troubleshooting note: If you have previously installed iTunes for Mac OS X, delete the old version before installing the new one. If you put iTunes in your Dock, remove the old iTunes icon from the Dock, then after you install the new iTunes, drag the new iTunes icon to the Dock.

Bob Newill adds: "The update mostly fixed my problem of iTunes crashing my USB devices while playing any type of music AND putting a load on my network, for instance emailing a large file. Now instead of just killing my USB all together, it will cut out for a brief second, then return to normal. The symptom is most noticeable due to my using SoundSticks."

iPod 1.1 KB articles Apple has also released a collection of Knowledge Base documents on the new iPod 1.1 software. For example:

iPod improvements noted by reader Ben Rosenthal writes: "iPod 1.1 includes automated support for users running FireWire through PC cards, like my FireWire2Go on my Lombard. I used to have to manually restart (menu play/pause) my iPod when plugging it into my computer (via the PC card) , hold back forward to force FireWire and iPod battery use, and restart again when done. Now, it's all automated. When I plug it in, iPod restarts and sets the FireWire connection this way by itself. When I remove the cable, it restarts again. What a convenience; the update process is so much faster now."
