Will it be Han Solo? Jabba the Hutt? Yoda? Chewbacca? Or possibly Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia?

Or will Darth Vader run away with the competition?

'Darth Vader would like a word," reads the Web site for the tournament to see who is the world's favorite 'Star Wars' character. StarWars.com

Today, Lucasfilm announced "This is Madness," its first-ever "Star Wars" NCAA basketball-style tournament, an effort to determine who is the world's favorite "Star Wars" character. Mashable was first to report the story.

There are four regions, two from the Light Side, and two from the Dark Side. StarWars.com plans on announcing the winner on April 9. There will be four rounds of voting before the winner is chosen. in the first round, there are 16 total matchups, such as Han Solo versus Lando Carlrissian, or Count Dooku versus Tarkin, and the winners of those pairings will move on to the second round. And so on.

This is a long time coming. After all, who hasn't had a few late-night, booze-fueled discussions about whether Yoda is better than R2-D2? Or whether Darth Vader could really kick Darth Maul's butt (obviously, he could).

"It's a showdown between the Light Side and Dark Side in the first This Is Madness tournament," reads the Web site for the competition. "Vote for your favorite Jedi, Sith, scoundrel, Rebel, or bounty hunter and help decide who is, once and for all, the galaxy's most popular 'Star Wars' character."

Voting in the competition begins March 18.
