We continue to receive reports from readers who experience issues with video playback -- usually for home-compressed video, not video from the iTunes music store -- on their iPods after applying the iPod Updater 2006-01-10.

MacFixIt reader Kent writes:

"I am also having problems with the latest iPod updater. I have a 60 gig 5G and have the same video playback problem other users have reported -- playback stops after about 25 seconds, freezes, then continues without audio. This only occurs with video I've encoded (handbrake or isquint), but not with material purchased or downloaded from the iTunes store."

Another reader adds

"Same problem on 60 GB iPod. Won't play video's encoded with isquint and other encoders for more than 30 seconds then pauses and comes back without sound."

Finally, Victor Medel writes:

"I am having issues with my video playback also. Unable to play any of my videos with sound after 30 seconds. All videos are applicable. It is very inconvenient. I have had to restore my iPod 5G to the original software for the videos to work properly."

Backlight problems Meanwhile, a handful of readers have reported failure of their iPod backlights after the update.

One reader writes:

"I just wanted to let you know that after installing the iPod updater 1.1, the backlight (hold menu key) function does not work on my ipod. It works fine otherwise, just have to keep going to settings to turn it on and off, just the menu/backlight on function is gone. I have found another person with the same problem on apples discussion board. i called apple and they didn't seem to know about this, and said i may have to send mine in for a return."

Reverting to earlier software In many cases, the aforementioned issues can be resolved by reverting to an earlier version of the iPod software. You can either use the CD that was included with your iPod to revert to a much earlier release, or use the iPod 2005-11-17 updater, which is still available from this mirror.

In order to apply the old software, simply run the updater application and select your connected iPod when prompted.
