Generic iPod icons We continue to receive reports that after applying the update, users' iPods no longer have custom iPod icons in the Finder.

MacFixIt reader Chris Habig reports a potential fix:

"I too, got the generic disk icon for my iPod following the latest security update. It's simple to get it back, though. In Panther's terminal (located in the Applications/Utilities folder), execute the following command (all as one line, make sure no line breaks exist) to rebuild the launch services database:

  • /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/
LaunchServices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user

"Then log out and back in.

"By the way, the new icon is better than the old. I remember the old iPod icon as a 2D representation. The new icon is shaded with a nice 3D appearance."

May be stalled, not frozen We continue to receive reports from users whose iPods seemingly will no longer turn on after applying iPod software update 2005-02-22.

In some cases, the iPod may be stalled rather than frozen, and will continue its procession to a normal startup after the update in a matter of minutes.

One reader writes:

"When I updated my 15 GB, third-generation iPod it did take a while for it to restart and load the update. I was doing other things at the time but it could have been longer than 10 minutes."

Another reader with a third-generation 40 GB iPod writes:

"I too waited a long, long time for the updater to run. (I wasn't even sure it was running / had run.) When the upgrade was actually done, iPod rebooted and everything was fine. "

iSight interference We've covered issues with iSight cameras interfering with iPod operation on a number of cases.

We've now received reports that having an iSight connected while performing the most recent iPod software update can cause issues.

One reader writes:

"I know this might be stating the obvious but I frequently have problems updating my ipod if my ichat camera is connected. If I unplug my camera before I connect my ipod, I don't seem to have problems with new updates of either software or music."

Bad FireWire cables to blame? In some cases, issues caused by faulty FireWire cables can be displaced to software updaters.

One reader writes:

"I have a third-generation iPod that frequently would not mount, would need to have it's software restored (but often was not found by the installer). When software updates came around I had just about every problem mentioned here.

"I went to the Apple Store and they told me I might need a new Firewire cable. So, I got one and 6 months later, I have not had any problems. It always mounts, recharges fine and the update the other day went smoothly.

"(BTW, my original cable looked just fine, no crimps, bends or anything.)
