iPod Shuffle failure (#2): Minijack problems

We previously reported that the iPod Shuffle is susceptible to a failure where the unit spontaneously becomes unable to transfer music to or from its host computer, cannot play music, and flashes an alternating green and orange light when the Play button is pressed. The issue appears insoluble for most users, leaving warranty activation (many units fail within the first year) the only option.

We've now received reports indicating failure of the iPod Shuffle's minijack.

One reader writes:

"My iPod shuffle minijack seems to have failed after 15 months of use. Only one channel works unless you wiggle and hold the plug. It's out of warranty. An Apple store employee suggested taking it apart and bending the spring back in place so it grasps the plug."

Meanwhile, notes continue to pour in regarding the previously reported "flashing lights of death" failure.

MacFixIt reader Efrain Pizarro writes:

"After reading the Apple forums I saw this address as a place where they can look at the FLOD (Flashing Lights Of Death) problem with the iPod Shuffles. Mine is updated, is about a year old, and my iTunes version is 6.02. It was working fine, ran out of battery, plugged it in for charge, yellow light came on, after a whole day light never turned into green and took it out to play a song and verify the charge. Charge was fine, but when the play button is pressed, FLOD took over the Ipod shuffle. Put it back to see what was the problem, and Itunes does not recognize it, and Windows XP sees it as a mass storage device, but won't let me format, or any other function, instead everything freezes up and becomes "Not Responding". Any solution would be appreciated, great product while it worked, after reading all the threads for the shuffle and all other ipods, I am hard pressed to trust Apple with any product again."
