iPod Classic Firmware 1.0.1: Fixes some freeze/reset problems

apparent bug fixes and performance improvements.

CNET staff

Apple has released a firmware update for the iPod Classic that is available only via iTunes while the device is connected (it should be found automatically when the iPod Classic is connected -- if not, click the "Check for Update" button after selecting the iPod from the left-hand pane.)

This update appears to resolve many of the issues we previously reported afflicting the unit, including one where the device constantly resets and erases all custom settings, cycling to the Apple logo screen then the "Choose a language" prompt; and another where the unit repeatedly freezes during routine operation, not responding to clicks or scroll-wheel movement. We previously noted that the issue can be temporarily resolved by not synchronizing album artwork to the iPod Classic.

A poster to Apple's Discussion boards, jrcsh6, writes:

"(I experienced) the skipping which was really just freeze's I think. And then the longer freezing. Slow interface and all. I got the updated firmware/software 1.0.1 today and all my problems are gone. So far I'm about play with it some to see, but my initial test is that it's the update I was waiting on."

We've also received reports that this update improves the performance of CoverFlow functions on the iPod Clasic.
