iPod chipmaker CEO quits; Palm to enter China market; more

CEO of iPod chipmaker quits CNET reports that the chief executive of PortalPlayer, the start-up whose chip powers Apple Computer's iPod digital music player, has resigned. "John Mallard, who was chief technology officer at National Semiconductor before helping launch PortalPlayer in May 1999, stepped down last week. No reason was given for the move, which was made by "mutual agreement" with the board, according to Michael Maia, the company's vice president of marketing." More.

A replacement for Flash ZDNN reports that engineers are working on the successor to Flash memory storage. "So-called flash memory will remain viable for several more years, but researchers anticipate that later this decade manufacturing limitations will force the industry to adopt a new technology. A replacement is one of the topics being discussed at the International Electron Devices meeting in San Francisco this week." More.

Palm to enter China market Reuters notes Palm's announcement that it intends to enter the China market in the first half of 2003. "Philip Chan, Palm Solutions Group vice president for North Asia, made the projection at the PalmSource China Forum in Beijing, where Palm was scouting applications being created by Chinese developers, according to a company statement released in the United States."
