Sharing between libraries; issues A few readers have reported a new inability to copy photos between shared libraries on different Macs after the iPhoto 6.0 update.

MacFixIt reader Mike Simpson writes:

"It's not possible to actually copy photos between shared libraries on different computers. Since I often import photos on my powerbook but then want to collect them all onto my G5, I'll be really upset if this feature is now gone."

If you are experiencing a similar issue, please let us know.

Problems launching -- stalls on library updating; possible fix Several users have reported problems launching iPhoto, with the program stalling on the "Library updating process"

One reader writes:

"I started iPhoto and it started to upgrade my library, and then it said i didn't have permissions."

In some cases, this issue can be resolved via the following process:

  • Navigate to the ~/Pictures/ directory, then select the "iPhoto Library" folder and perform a "Get Info" command -- either go to the File menu and select "Get Info."
  • Look at the "Ownership and Permissions" section -- expand the "Details" section using the appropriate arrow.
  • Click the padlock next to the "Owner" pull-down menu and enter your administrator password.
  • Next, set the "Owner" menu (which should no longer be grayed out) to your current username and set "Read and Write" access.
  • Click the "Apply to enclosed items..." button

After performing these steps, try launching iPhoto 6.0 again and check for persistence of the problem.

Re-sizing issues MacFixIt reader Mark Rougeux notes that Apple has changed the re-sizing mechanism in iPhoto 6.0, making it potentially more difficult to scale multiple images on the screen for simultaneous viewing.

Mark writes:

"As to iPhoto 6.0, there is an issue when resizing your photos with the slider in the main window. The increase in size is not continuous. As the size increases, there are fewer photos in each row, and after the photos reach a size of about 1.5" x 2.5" on my screen (roughly 5 photos to a row, depending on the size of the window), the next increment in size is a single photo filling the entire window. In prior version the magnification wasn't that smooth either, but at least you could enlarge the photos in a more continuous fashion, so that you had just 2 or 3 photos in a row and could more easily make comparisons."

Smart album issues Some users are reporting problems with smart albums not picking up images that should adhere to designated criteria.

Ray Sharpe writes:

"I'm trying to create a smart album using "Title" > contains > [...]

"If you have 10 pics with the title 'Tom Dick and Harry', and you ask the smart album to pick up any title 'containing' Tom and Dick it should pick up all 10 pics, right? Not so. It appears empty."

Cannot send photocast RSS feed to Windows systems Several readers have reported that they are unable to make their photocast feed display on RSS readers in Windows.

The problem is that a photo-capable reader is required on Windows systems, such as Blog Navigator.

MacFixIt reader Mark Degg has another tip for photocasting to Windows users:

"It is also a good idea to change the photocast in the url of the feed to web i.e. http://photocast.mac.com to http://web.mac.com (for Windows users). Be sure to have good image descriptions as it shows text links to the images."

Garbled images from some cameras Some users are reporting garbled photos when importing from some cameras.

MacFixIt reader Keith Young writes:

"Many of my photos taken with my Nikon D70 that I workflowed through Capture One Pro and converted to JPEG show a dramatic distortion at about 60° to the right and lose most of their colour, resulting in a greyscale appearance. They show this phenomena when enlarged from the library and within my slide shows. This means that iPhoto 6 is not a viable piece of software. All 3 of my upgraded Macs are affected. Interestingly not all of my D70 pictures are affected. It would appear that only those that I processed using Phase Ones Capture Pro are altered. The originals were converted from RAW to JPEG. The same photos are not affected in Aperture."

Calendar problems -- unexpected quits, data being lost Several users have reported unexpected quits when attempting to create calendars in iPhoto 6.0.

Eric Tamashasky writes:

"Making a calendar, we've had iPhoto unexpectedly quit twice now. The first time, we lost everything. This included the birthdays and photos and calendar. The second time, we had previously quit the application and lost only a couple of picture placements on the pages. No clue what's causing this."

Another reader adds:

"If you open the "calendar view" (located under the Library toggle), check 2005. Then perform an import with photos from 2005 or duplicate a photo shown in 2005. The photo(s) do not show in the calendar view. They are in the library, but don't immediately show in the calendar view."
