"Edit with external editor" broken Several MacFixIt readers have confirmed that the "Edit with external editor" function is broken in iPhoto 5. MacFixIt reader Claude Cauwe writes:

"When you control-click on a picture, "edit with external editor" is grayed, and nothing seems to help to make it back alive.

"I re-located the app (Photoshop CS) in iPhoto's preferences, but not to avail."

"Send to iDVD" problems MacFixIt reader Pete reports issues with the "Send to iDVD" function:

"Using the 'Send to iDVD' menu option in the iPhoto 5 slideshow feature, I am unable to obtain a correct aspect ratio in the resulting movie that is imported into iDVD 5.

"More specifically, using the default slideshow options in iPhoto (i.e. Ken Burns effect enabled), I have attempted to send three different viewing formats of the slideshow to iDVD. All result in some distortion of the images when viewed in iDVD or written out to DVD via iDVD.

"One interesting thing here is that the exported movies that iPhoto produces for iDVD look correct when viewed with Quicktime. As a comparison of iDVD's slideshow capabilities, when I create a slide show in iDVD using only photos accessible from within iDVD, the resulting slideshow does preserve the aspect ratio of the images. Thus, the final slideshow looks correct. With this method, getting the 'automatic' Ken Burns effect is not possible. In addition, exporting widescreen slideshow formats from iPhoto do not preserve the widescreen format in iDVD. However viewing the exported widescreen slideshow movie (that iPhoto produces) using Quicktime shows the correct aspect ratio. Thinking that that widescreen did not work correctly in iDVD, I used iMovie HD to produce a widescreen (non-HD) movie and brought that into iDVD. This works correctly in that the movie is indeed shown with it's widescreen formatting and the aspect ratios are preserved. Finally, if I drag a slideshow from iPhoto's Source list to iDVD, the slideshow works perfectly, but there is no Ken Burns effect animation applied to the images and there is no way to get widescreen viewing.

"I've also posted a web page that shows the problem."

Keyword Assistant conflict MacFixIt reader Mark Rougeux reports a conflict between iPhoto 5 and Keyword Assistant 1.8.1 (an iPhoto keyword management plugin) as well as a simple solution:

"I found out the hard way that if Keyword Assistant is installed, it will prevent iPhoto 5 from starting up at all. Luckily a poster on the Apple iPhoto discussion board saved my sanity. The plug-in named KeywordAssistant.bundle must be removed. Do a search for KeywordAssistant to find it."
