iPhoto 5.0.2: Audio synchronization off in slideshow exports, use iMovie instead

CNET staff

A number of readers have noted that when exporting slideshows as .mov files from iPhoto, music or other audio included in the slideshow does not synchronize correctly with the still transitions.

MacFixIt reader Jim Sauer, for instance, writes:

"I created a 3-minute slideshow using the enhanced slideshow features of iPhoto 5 (custom Ken Burns, etc.). The slideshow plays perfectly in iPhoto and the audio and video synchronize very nicely.

"I tried sharing the slideshow two ways ('Send to DVD' and 'Export"). In both cases a large QuickTime file (*.MOV) is created. In theory this is a very powerful feature. Unfortunately, when these exported slideshows are played, the audio and video do not maintain their synchronization. The video playback is slightly faster than the audio."

One way to get around this limitation with regard to iPhoto's slideshow export abilities is to simply create the iPhoto slideshow without music, then export it as a .mov file. Then, open the .mov file with iMovie and synchronize any desired music.

Sending the file to iDVD or exporting it as a .mov file from iMovie will not result in synchronization issues.
