iPhoto 4.0.1: Privileges fix; blurriness

Privileges fix Several readers have reported a problem with iPhoto 4.0.1 described by William Plasencia:

"On my iBook I tried to update iPhoto to 4.0.1 and it seemed to update fine using the Software Update. But when I tried launching it the program crashed and the icon turned generic."

MacFixIt reader Michael Berris found the cause, and solution for this particular issue: "It seemed odd how the application would not open nor would it keep its icon. So I decided to check the package, and came to find out that the folder privileges had been turned off, so that the application could not access itself. I went through and changed the privileges of most the folders and now it works."

Blurriness Mal Smith reports a separate issue where images become distorted:

"When I double-clicked on a thumbnail, the enlarged edit-mode picture was stretched in all dimensions to fill the available edit screen. Pressing Next & previous did the same thing, so did exiting edit and selecting another thumbnail. Strangely, on exiting edit mode, the image momentarily snapped back to the correct proportions in the edit window before the thumbs re-appeared.

If you select a thumbnail in Organize and click Edit (rather than double-click the thumb) this problem doesn't always happen, but if it does, then clicking Next followed by Previous (in Edit) can stop it. Once the problem is sorted like this it doesn't stretch again.

The stretch happens on the second pass of pixelization. Looks like the new render engine may have some flaws.

And Drew D. Saur notes that the problem with blurred photos in "Edit" mode - previously reported - still exists in iPhoto 4.0.1:

"Just a note to let you know that iPhoto 4.0.1 still displays blurred photos in 'Edit' mode, and those of us who take lots of vertical photos are still cringing at the thought of using the software to look at our work. Ugh. Nobody at Apple has even acknowledged the problem, and since this may be the most noticeable bug in iPhoto 4, this is particularly frustrating."
