iPhone 5S launching 20 June, on sale in July, report says
It's rumoured Apple will announce the next iPhone on 20 June, and it'll go on sale the following month.
Apple's next iPhone has a possible release date. If Japanese site MacFan is to be believed, we'll see the iPhone 5S unveiled on 20 June, and it'll hit shop shelves in July, our sister site reports.
The much-rumoured cut-price iPhone could also make its debut in August, the report says, though it'll be targeted at developing markets like China and India, so it might not make it to these shores. Of course this is all hearsay at the moment, so best take it with a pinch of salt.
There's no word on where exactly MacFan sourced this info from either. The site is celebrating its 20th anniversary, so could be trying to drum up exposure with a big rumour story.
But a June launch could well be on the cards. Apple announced the iPhone 5 in September last year, but it's already been superseded by the Samsung Galaxy S4, which launched just a couple of weeks ago. If Apple waits until September to announce the next iPhone, it'll have had to endure months of Samsung blowing raspberries and chanting "Our phone is newer than yours."
Apple also unveiled the original iPhone, iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 in the month of June, only switching to September for the iPhone 4S and 5. Apple analyst Gene Munster reckons the iPhone 5S will launch in late June, as does KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Apple usually holds its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) around June, though it hasn't announced the dates for this year yet. It's kept the iPhone announcement separate the last couple of years so it didn't steal its iOS software's thunder, but the threat from Samsung might mean this changes. If the iPhone is announced at WWDC, expect it to be the star of the show.
