Apple has flogged 9 million of its new iPhone models since they went on sale on Friday, with Tim Cook and pals saying that demand for the fingerprint-scanning 5S has far exceeded the initial supply.

"Many online orders are scheduled to be shipped in the coming weeks," Apple gloats, though that does mean that many folks who've bought the 5S online will be left waiting ages to get their mitts on the new mobile.

"This is our best iPhone launch yet," Tim Cook said in a statement, sounding pleased as punch. Apple also said that more than 200 million of its mobile gadgets are now running iOS 7.

Last year the iPhone 5 sold 5 million units in its opening weekend. Apple didn't divulge which of its two new phones had proved more popular, though lumping sales numbers for both phones into one figure could suggest that one of the two mobiles is dramatically less popular with shoppers.

Earlier reports from retailers suggested that pre-order figures for the iPhone 5C were a fraction of what Apple's managed in previous years.

The iPhone 5S comes in silver and gold and packs a fingerprint scanner, as well as Apple's new A7 chip which brings treats like slow-motion video.

The iPhone 5C meanwhile is made of plastic and comes in a veritable rainbow of bright colours, but is considerably pricier than we'd hoped.
