iOS 7 update smashes records, doubles Internet traffic

iOS 7 has smashed records, doubling Internet traffic as phone fans race to download the software and update iPhone and iPad.

The new iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C -- on sale today -- may have left many of you cold, but iOS 7 proved enormously popular with owners of older iPhones and iPads.

Broadband bigwigs BT Retail told the Guardian that British web traffic hit record levels. Worldwide traffic shot up by 12 per cent.

Promising the biggest makeover for Apple devices ever, iOS 7 went live on Wednesday evening. A whopping 130m people across the world are estimated to have downloaded the update in less than 12 hours. And by Thursday morning analytics company Mixpanel reckoned that a third of Apple devices had updated to iOS 7.

When the iOS 7 update first became available the scrum of people trying to download the fancy new software caused many to encounter iOS 7 error message and a long wait, but it should be much quicker now if you've held off: I waited until the morning after to update my iPhone and update my iPad, and I didn't have any problems.

iOS 7 may be a hit, but the new iPhone may not be: pre-orders were a fraction of previous launches and it's still suffering from stock shortages, but that didn't stop many hardy souls camping out for their new phone.
