iOS 10 bug blamed for handcuffing Kwikset Kevo smart lock
Lock maker says bug in Apple's newest mobile operating system will limit functionality of its touch-to-open feature.
A bug will hobble the touch-to-open feature on Kwikset's Kevo electronic deadbolt, the lock's makers say.
iOS 10, which is due to be released Tuesday, has a bug that will affect the functionality of the Kwikset Kevo, the makers of the Bluetooth electronic deadbolt warned Monday.
Kwikset said users of the first and second generation Kevo will experience limited functionality with its touch-to-open, which unlocks the lock when touched with a paired Android or iOS device. Android devices are unaffected, but Kwikset warned that the feature will work on iOS 10 devices only if the app is open and visible on the screen when users try to use their device to lock or unlock the smart lock.
Apple unveiled the newest version of its mobile software on Wednesday during the tech giant's annual late-summer event in San Francisco. Apple hopes the new iOS will help boost sales of its mobile gadgets as we head into the holiday shopping season.
Kwikset said it is working with Apple on a solution to restore touch-to-open functionality. Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
New features in iOS 10 include upgrades to the Siri voice assistant, to photos and maps, as well as more interaction via the Message app.
