IomegaWare freezes persist; Mass Storage files may be involved

Richard Shores writes: "I have contacted Iomega and was told that IomegaWare 2.1 does not fix all cases of the "freezing" problem on startup [as reported here in our MacFixIt Reports on the iMac and the iBook] and they are still working with Apple to come up with a permanent solution."

Our sources confirm this, further suggesting that the culprit may be an interaction between the IomegaWare software and the Apple USB Mass Storage Extension and USB Mass Storage Support files (especially the versions that came with the Mac OS 8.6 software that initially shipped with these Macs). Try removing the Mass Storage files if you have them installed and see if that helps. However, this code is supposedly built-in to the ROM file of Mac OS 9, so this may not work for Mac OS 9 users. The alternative suggested solution has been to delete the Iomega files altogether and go with the Apple USB drivers.

Also note that Iomega Driver has no effect on USB drives; it is intended for ATAPI/SCSI drives only. USB drives use the separate USB Iomega Driver together with the driver specific to the device (Zip; Jaz; Clik!).
