IomegaWare 3.0: Reports of data/disk corruption

Regarding our previous coverage of IomegaWare 3.0, we have two reports of apparent data corruption caused by the new software:

Jim Mueller writes: "I can confirm the reports of unreadable Zip disks with earlier drivers after 3.0 is installed. In addition, I allowed 3.0 to update the Iomega disk driver (from 6.0.7 to 9.0.9) on a perfectly good (and fortunately backed up) Zip disk. After reinsertion and getting the 'can't read this disk' message and no disk icon on the desktop, I ejected the disk and launched Disk Warrior 2.1 and Norton SystemWorks. I then reinserted the disk (still didn't mount on the desktop). DW found massive directory errors plus damaged folder icons and Norton found damaged resource forks in every file on the disk. Completely shot."

Jeff Hanson adds: "If you open the Iomega Tools application with a disk in the drive and click on the Erase/Initialize Disk Button and the window opens up with the options to do a short format or long format, but you don't actually erase or reformat the disk (clicking Cancel instead): When you eject the disk and reinsert the disk it is unreadable and asks you to reinitialize the disk. Reverting to the older version of Iomega's software does not allow access to the disk. I ran Norton Utilities 6.0 and it reported major errors in the partition map and Master Directory Blocks. Other errors were also reported. So it appears that by merely opening up this window, it actually damages the disk!"
