IomegaWare 3.0: Readers confirm reports of disk corruption

Based on replies to yesterday's report of Zip disk corruption associated with using the new IomegaWare 3.0 software, we advise against installing this upgrade until Iomega replies on the problems reported.

Although a few users (such as Wes Palmer and Joe Ronchetto) reported not seeing these symptoms, the majority of reader replies confirmed the problem. For example:

Ken Marks writes: "I was able to duplicate the problem outlined by Jim Mueller and Jeff Hanson. With Iomega Tools 3.0, including driver version 6.0.9, installed. I opened the Tools application with a Zip disk in the drive. I then opened the initialize window and, without initializing the disk, canceled the operation. I then quit Tools and ejected the Zip disk. Upon reinserting the disk it was unreadable and asked if I wanted to initialize it..."

Lew Harvey concurs: "My experience with Iomega Tools 3.0 is exactly the same as Jeff Hanson reported. Opening Tools and selecting the Format option and then clicking Cancel renders a Zip 100 (in my case) disk unreadable the next time it is inserted in the Zip drive. I would warn everybody not to upgrade Iomega Tools until they have sorted this out."

Ken Peterson adds: "Confirmed on my Mac. I found that the problem disappeared after reverting to Tools 6.4.2 and the matching Iomega Drive Options control panel."

Cliff Morrison writes: "Jeff Hanson is dead right. Same thing happened to me."

Jay Handel claimed to get the same reports of errors in Norton Utilities even with IomegaWare 2.7.2. We have not had other reports of this.

Update: Iomega has apparently removed IomegaWare 3.0 and is now listing 2.8 as the recommended version its download page. (Thanks, Jeff Hanson.)
