Intel-based Macs: Rosetta (#11): Making Remote Desktop work; Making ClamXav work

We continue to track the compatibility of various PowerPC-coded applications running under the Rosetta environment utilized by Intel-based Macs.

The entire list of working and non-working applications can be found in our comprehensive Rosetta Compatibility index.

Making Remote Desktop work We previously reported that Apple Remote Desktop is, by default, incompatible with Intel-based Macs, failing to run properly under Rosetta.

Now MacFixIt reader Jason has found a solution for making the application work correctly under Rosetta.

Jason writes:

"I managed to get Remote Desktop working on my MacBook Pro. I did this after using the Migration Assistant to transfer data when I got my new MacBook Pro.

I first imported data and applications (including remote desktop 2.2). I then removed Remote Desktop executing these commands in Terminal:

  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/RemoteDesktop.menu
  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/
  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/PreferencePanes/ARDPref.prefPane
  • sudo rm -rf /System/Library/StartupItems/RemoteDesktopAgent/
  • sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ARDAgent.plist
  • sudo rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.RemoteManagement.plist

"Then I started remote desktop which re-installed the removed items, and it worked."

Making ClamXav work Meanwhile, another MacFixIt reader reports a kludgy method for getting the anti-virus software ClamXav to run on Intel-based Macs:

"Hello, I have gotten the PowerPC version of ClamXav working with very little issue and works perfect from my test. To get it running, launch it normal and let it bounce for 10 seconds. After that, force quit it and on the program, right click or hold Ctrl and left click and then click show package contents. After that, go to contents and then resources and run 'clamavEngineInstaller.pkg'. After that, run as usual."
