Intel-based Macs: More on problems with VPN connections (#2): Potential fix

CNET staff

We continue to report an issue where Intel-based Macs are unable to maintain VPN (PPTP) connections, dropping the connections within a few minutes after initializing.

MacFixIt reader Pete Sutton writes:

"My Intel-based Mac will time out during negotiation (PPTP). My G5 will connect straight through with same settings."

MacFixIt reader Gardiner Reynolds adds:

"I also am having VPN problems, but with Gracion's DigiTunnel(Universal Binary) on a Mac Mini Duo. The VPN server is a 2003 Windows Server over PPTP. It rarely connects, and after it does it will not connect again without a restart. "

For some users, this issue was resolved with Mac OS X 10.4.6. For others, the issue persists into Mac OS X 10.4.7.

In some cases, the solution is to open the Terminal (located in Applications/Utilities) and enter the following command, which will disable the Apple Client Server protocol:

  • sudo serveradmin settings vpn:Servers:com.apple.ppp.l2tp:PPP:ACSPEnabled=0

note that you will have to enter your administrator password after pressing return.
