Installing Wacom 4.4.1 software in Mac OS 9

Regarding our recent coverage of delayed response and freeze problems with the Wacom Graphire tablets and the Wacom 4.50 software (see previous item): Several readers have noted that, while downgrading to the version 4.4.1 software solves the problems (as we reported), this does not work in Mac OS 9 because the 4.4.1 Installer application does not work in Mac OS 9. According to these readers, Wacom has stated that a new version, fixing these issues, is coming soon. Meanwhile, when I ran the Wacom Installer for the 4.4.1 software on my iMac DV running Mac OS 9, I found that it did work - in a very odd way. Almost immediately after launching the Installer, a Finder alert message appeared in the background which said that the Installer had quit. But the Installer had in fact not quit. And it then successfully installed the software. All has worked fine since. In fact, I find this to be a really great product for those who want a convenient combination of a (wireless) mouse and a pen.
