Indeo Video 4.4 released by Apple

Dan Frakes (of InformInit) writes: "Apple just released Indeo Video 4 (v4.4.0). It only works with QuickTime Pro 3.0, but it's an important update. For two or three years now, Mac users have been stuck using version 3.2, keeping us from being able to view most AVI movies. This should update QuickTime so that it can view any AVI movie out there."

However, some problems may remain: Michael LeRoux was still unable to play AVI movies, despite installing the upgrade. He writes: "In my Extensions folder are the new file Indeo Video 4 (4.4.0) as well as the older Indeo Video (3.22.24.09) and Intel Raw Video (1.10.20.02) files that Microsoft Explorer previously installed. After reading the tech note which explains that Indeo Video 4 is not backwards compatible, I decided to leave the new files and old files together in the Extensions folder. I've tried just about every combination of these three files without any luck."
