Indecent Exposure 9: Innovative excess?

Matt as teleconversionary oracle, gimmicks vs. great features, and dusting the dust off the dust-reduction debate. And, as always, it's a fun-filled news-o-rama.

Lori Grunin Senior Editor / Advice
I've been reviewing hardware and software, devising testing methodology and handed out buying advice for what seems like forever; I'm currently absorbed by computers and gaming hardware, but previously spent many years concentrating on cameras. I've also volunteered with a cat rescue for over 15 years doing adoptions, designing marketing materials, managing volunteers and, of course, photographing cats.

Time to buy?

I'm enjoying the show, and have a quick question. I'll be going to Nepal this autumn (shameless plug: the team I'm on won the Asian part of this humanitarian architecture competition: http://www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/challenge), and thought about getting a dSLR camera to take with, to replace my Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ50. Will a dSLR make that much difference to the photos I take? As a once/twice in a lifetime opportunity, I thought I might invest in some nice kit. Is it worth waiting for closer to the time to see what else comes out, or buy something sooner, and get used to using it? Thanks, Gwilym
