Camera processors

How much weight do you put to the processor when looking for a new digital camera? For example, looking at the 40D vs. the Rebel XSi. In general the 40D would be accepted to be the better camera, but it uses the Digic II processor, where the Rebel uses (in theory) a lessor CMOS chip (I guess they are complimentary in Canon camera) but uses the newer Digic III processor. Or in the Nikon line, all the newer camera use their new Expeed processor, so does a lesser level camera (like the new D60) because of the newer better processor then have an advantage over older higher level camera (like the D200)? So, can a better processor make up for a lessor sensor?--Jay
