Imation SuperDisk ROM update: a follow-up

Last time, we noted that Imation had posted a SuperDisk ROM Update 1.0. Regarding installing this update, the most important message readers have sent us is this: Check the Read Me information very carefully before installing the update. Failure to follow the instructions can spell doom for your drive. Beyond that:
Several readers found that the Installer claimed that their drive already had the update and therefore would not install.

On a related note, Jeff Wiseman spoke to Imation Tech Support about the ROM update. They told him that the firmware fix was specifically intended not to be generally available nor widely used. According to the representative, it was designed for people to use only if they were referred to do so by Tech Support.

Still, most of the reports we have received from people who have tried the update indicate that it worked fine - although little if any improvements in mounting time were noticed. However, when Jeff Wiseman tried it, even though he followed directions and everything seemed to go as the documentation said it would, he could not mount any disks after the update was completed.

Caution is warranted here. For now, I would advise against installing this ROM update unless you are really bothered by one of the problems it is designed to fix.

OSL Last time, we also noted the presence of an ObjectSupportLib file on the Installer CD. In this regard, Charles Nancarrow writes: "The ObjectSupportLib file is occasionally required by Installer software. Apple actually created the installer for Imation. It uses the Apple Software Restore utility to install the required items in their correct place. As ObjectSupportLib is not needed for Mac OS 8.x, OSL is probably just there as a legacy item."
