Imation SuperDisk: ROM Update 1.0; first impressions

I finally added a Imation SuperDisk to my Rev. B iMac yesterday. Here's my initial reaction:

So far, it works as advertised. When accessing a disk, it's a bit noisier than I might have expected, and it sometimes accesses a disk at times I would not have predicted (such as when simply moving the location of the disk icon). But it has handled copy requests just fine.

The Installer CD that came with the drive included version 1.0 of the SuperDisk drivers. Searching around the CD for what else the Installer might install, I discovered iMac Update 1.0 (not needed for my iMac and likely not automatically installed by the SuperDisk Installer anyway) and (of all things) ObjectSupportLib 1.2 (I can't imagine why that's included). And that was about it. The Installer said it would install over 2MB of software (which is more than all of those files added together - even if you also throw in the documentation files). So maybe I was missing something. Still, I decided not to run the CD Installer right away. Instead, I downloaded the USB SuperDisk drivers 1.31 update and installed those. Everything worked perfectly at that point, so I never did run the original CD Installer.

Meanwhile, overlooked last time when I first mentioned the latest driver updates, is a recently released SuperDisk ROM Update 1.0. It offers the following fixes:

  • Fixes bug when a SuperDisk is ejected and immediately replaced with an 1.4 MB diskette and the disk's icon may not appear.
  • Fixes bug where the drive may not mount a disk on an iMac if the drive has been idle for an extended period of time.
  • Reduces the time to mount a disk.

I have not installed this update as yet (if by some chance installing a firmware update makes things worse rather than better, there is no way to revert back to the old firmware; so I am cautious; I'll probably wait to see if I get bit by these bugs). However, Shane Massey wrote to say that he did install it. He adds: "So far, it seems to be working."
