Image problems on Cinema Displays (#2): Pink tinting, image persistence

We continue to report on pink tinting and image persistence (also described as "ghosting" where vague remnants of various images remain onscreen longer than they should) with various Apple Cinema Displays, particularly 23" models.

MacFixIt reader Pete McKenna writes:

"I bought a 23" Cinema Display about 5 months ago, and just in the past 2 weeks I've also noticed that ghost-like 'leftover' from a window I've just closed. I still have it under warranty so I'm calling my Apple store tomorrow and going to find out about replacing it."

Mike Stockwell adds:

"Same problem as Jason on my 23" Cinema Display- window ghosts and pink edges. The problem showed up about 4 months after the warranty expired so I just decided to look into other brands when I pass this system on to the intern's station- if it doesn't get too much worse."

Another reader reports on obtaining replacement displays from Apple under AppleCare coverage -- some replacement units are actually worse than the units they replace.

"I have been experiencing problems with an Apple 23" Cinema Display HD as the screen started to lose pixels all over and the screen became pink at the edges.

"This monitor was purchased 3 years ago and was covered by AppleCare so whilst under warranty Apple sent a local company to repair it. The monitor was taken away and returned but I checked for dead pixels using monitors test on Techtool Pro v4.1.1 and discovered too many dead pixels according to the Apple engineer who immediately took it back for another replacement complete LCD unit. The grey background also displayed extreme variation of different shades ranging from pink to cyan.

"The monitor was returned and in the presence of the engineer my quick tests revealed even worse image quality on a 2nd brand new LCD panel! After another brand new LCD panel being replaced on site at my house we discovered more issues of unevenness and color variations on a grey background.

"Finally after further pressure from the Apple authorized engineers, Apple agreed to replace my monitor with the current version of the 23" Cinema Display. This too has issues of color variation and unevenness but not quite as serious as before."

Finally, MacFixIt reader Roy Larke reports a similar display issue with the LCD on an iMac G5.

Roy writes:

"Our iMac G5 21" display 'went pink' after about 4 months of use. We hadn't turned it on for 2-3 weeks as we'd been on vacation, but I also wondered if it was because we put a dust cover over the machine too soon after use (we don't do this anymore). We tried a few things to fix it including changing monitor settings and even, on advice of Apple, rebooting from a separate system, but the pink tint remained. Luckily we were within warranty so Apple repaired the screen for us."
