Photo Booth does not relinquish built-in iSight We've previously reported on issues where some applications fail to relinquish use of FireWire-based (external) iSight cameras.

It now appears that users are having similar problems with the USB 2.0-based iSight built-in to the new iMac G5s.

MacFixIt reader Gary Ewer writes:

"I have a new 20-inch iMac G5 (iSight). I find that every time I quit Photo Booth, it doesn't relinquish control of the iSight camera. So when I try to use iChat, it tells me that there is no camera attached. The only way I have found to regain the camera control is to restart the computer. Have you heard of this problem before?"

If you are having this problem, you may want to open the Activity Viewer application (located in Applications/Utilities) and look for a process related to the application that you believe may be occupying the camera, and kill it.

Front Row also does not work with networked home directories We previously reported that Front Row is not able to access music or video tracks that are shared from another system in iTunes.

We've now received reports indicating that data on network-mounted home directories is also not accessible.

One reader writes:

"We have several Mac's in the house include a new 20" iMac G5/iSight (1.5GB) I got today. All of the Macs are networked to OS X Server 10.4.3.

"I am using standard Apple network mounted home directories with logins using LDAP using Apple Directory Services. All by the book.

"My Music Library has 127K songs. Front row just spins and spins when trying to use Front Row/Music and Front Row/Photo's.

"It seems to be like someone at Apple forgot to optimize /test using the new iMac G5 with networked home directories. It seems that Front Row will not work with networked home directories."
