iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3 (#3): Remote speaker issues; interrupted update process

Remote speaker issues Some users are reporting issues with use of remote speakers via AirTunes after applying the iMac EFI Firmware Update 1.3. Chess Edwards writes:

"After updating my iMac's firmware I can no longer connect to more than one set of remote speakers utilizing airtunes and my Airport Express units. I can connect to one set of speakers but not multiple sets as I could before. I get an error that states "An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker "name of speakers".  An unknown error occurred (-3256).

Traditionally (under Tiger), the fix for this issue has been to Open System Preferences, choose Sharing, then open the Firewall tab, then click Advanced and uncheck the "Block UDP Traffic" option. Under Leopard, however, this UDP traffic option no longer exists.

Did it take? Some users are reporting a freeze that occurs while the firmware update process is taking place. MacFixIt reader Howard Cohen writes:

"When I ran the update on my 24" Aluminum iMac (late 2007 model) I watched the progress bar proceed to its end. Then my machine just hung.  After about 30 minutes waiting for it to restart, I just rebooted it myself.  When it started up, it said the update was complete.  So, in other words, it didn't restart on its own, but it seemed benign.  However, it is disconcerting, especially because the instructions warn not to interrupt the process."

Cases like Howard's emphasize the need to burn and make handy the Firmware Restoration 1.6 disc. You can only use this to restore the firmware after an interrupted or unsuccessful update.
