BusinessWeek compares iMac to Gateway, Sony A BusinessWeek online article reviewing "heavy-lifting" desktops says "Apple reminded the industry that style counts when it released the eye-catching iMac, currently priced from $1,199 to $1,999. Gateway responded with its Profile 4, retailing from $999 to $1,999. Like the iMac, the Windows-based Profile showcases a liquid-crystal display, but the screen's casing contains disk drives, processor, and other paraphernalia." More.

Wireless a hot topic at Comdex CNET reports that wireless networking, particularly Wi-Fi, along with the home and office devices that take advantage of these connections, will be a dominant theme at the weeklong Comdex technology trade show that starts Sunday in Las Vegas. "Wireless is expected to be a big part of Microsoft CEO Bill Gates' keynote address Sunday night and will play a role in many of the hot products at the show." More.

New PCI standard offers 1 GB per second ZDNN notes that the PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG), an industry consortium that includes representatives from Intel, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and other PC heavyweights, said it has begun initial work to develop specifications for PCI-X 1066, the successor to the recent PCI-X 266 and PCI-X 533 specifications. "The newest standard will allow PC components to exchange data at bandwidths of up to 8.5 gigabytes per second, compared with less than 1 gigabyte per second for current versions." More.

Teachers happy with Maine iBooks In "Teachers Mainely Happy With Tech," Wired News attempts to gauge reaction to the implementation of iBooks in hundreds of schools across Maine. "A recent trip to three Maine schools offered a glimpse of how attitudes about the program are shifting: Many teachers are now more enthusiastic than dubious... They allow for more student-centered projects and give kids access to a variety of current documents and news sources." More.
