Illustrator CS2 12.0.1 (#4): Users still experiencing install failures, virus software may be cause

Despite reports from some readers that a re-released version of the Adobe Illustrator CS2 12.0.1 updater fixed initial issues with failed installations, users are still reporting aborted update processes.

Tom Simmons writes:

"I read your report on the new release of 12.01, but the install still fails on all my machines."

Another reader adds:

"We are still having the same failed to install issue. We tried the workaround and also tried the new updater this morning. Still getting the failed to install."

It appears that in at least some of these cases, virus software may be culpable, preventing the update from completing.

Paul Gorski discovered that Norton Anti-virus and ClamXav were interfering with his attempted update.

"These programs interfere with these installs when the AV programs are set to scan or monitor the Desktop (MacOS X). I have been able to easily recreate this problem with ClamXav (not so repeatable with Norton AV.)

"Once the the update fails, even if the antivirus software is disabled, the update will continue to fail until the Adobe Updater preferences are deleted. (All files in and the directory: ~/Library/Preferences/AdobeUM and ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.ESD.AUM3App.plist.)

"Particularly with the Acrobat updates, Adobe Update Manager places (temporarily) disk images of the updates on the Desktop. The antivirus software appears to be interfering with this process. Once the update process is stopped, the Adobe Update Manager fails to work until the above mentioned directories and or files are deleted."

So, per Paul's experience, if you are having problems with the update process, try deleting all files from the directory:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/AdobeUM

and the individual file:

  • ~/Library/Preferences/com.adobe.ESD.AUM3App.plist

(Note: The tilde [~] indicates the current user directory, e.g. /Users/Current User)
