Matt Casamassina, who has spent the last 13 years covering Nintendo at game publisher IGN, is leaving the company and heading to Apple. According to his personal blog, Casamassina will be in charge of curating the gaming content in the App Store.

What, exactly, that means isn't clear, though Casamassina wrote, "In a nutshell, I will be leading the charge for games on the App Store, so whether you browse through iTunes, iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, the games content you see will be handpicked and organized by me and my team."

The job description, which is still up on Apple's jobs Web site, says, "The main focus of this role is to manage all aspects of game discovery, selection, and promotion for the Games category and to help develop new features that will enhance the gaming experience for our customers." So it sounds like Casamassina will have a hand in deciding which games get heavily promoted in the App Store as well as digging up lesser-known games to help promote user discovery.

That likely means he'll be in charge of selecting games to highlight in "hot lists" in iTunes and the App Store, but he hasn't yet responded to a request for more details. I'll update this post if I hear back.

Casamassina said Friday was his last day at IGN and that he'll start work in his new role in three weeks.
