Microsoft's Kinect could best the PlayStation Move in overall sales this holiday-shopping season, market researcher IDC predicts.

IDC, which conducted a survey in September with more than 750 "core" console gamers, expects that Microsoft will sell 2.5 million to 3 million Kinect units in the United States in the fourth quarter. It expects Sony to sell 2 million to 2.25 million Move units here in the same period.

"While it doesn't appear Kinect or Move will be this year's Tickle Me Elmo, millions of additional U.S. households will be enjoying motion-based gaming this holiday season," IDC research manager Lewis Ward said in a statement.

Microsoft's Kinect platform is scheduled to hit store shelves on Thursday . The peripheral allows gamers to control on-screen action by only using their bodies, rather than a controller.

Sony's PlayStation Move, by contrast, has a head start in the motion fight. The technology, which requires the PlayStation Eye camera and a Move controller, was released in September. In October, Sony announced that it shipped 1 million Move units to North America and Latin America during its first month of availability.

But both Kinect and Move have a long way to go before they can catch up to Nintendo's Wii platform. The company announced last week that it has sold more than 65.3 million Wii Remotes since its console's launch in 2006.
