iBook oddities: OS 9.1.1; Modem not listed

CNET staff
A reader informs us that Apple has confirmed two symptoms on 2001 iBooks.

9.1.1? The first symptom is one we have seen ourselves: The Startup Disk control panel in Mac OS 9.2.1 lists the OS version incorrectly as 9.1.1. According to Apple, this happens only if you install the OS with the Mac OS 9.2.1 Install CD that came with the iBook. Thus, a solution is to install the OS from the Restore CDs instead.

Update: Several readers confirm that this symptom (9.1.1) is not limited to iBooks.

Modem not listed? The same report claims confirmation of another symptom with thee newest (late 2001) iBooks: The internal modem may not be listed in the Modem control panel. This too can supposedly be solved by using the Restore instead of the Install CD, which makes sure the correct version of the needed files (e.g., Internal Modem V.90; Internal USB Modem) are installed. However, it sounds as if Apple may still not have all the details worked out yet on this matter.

In any case, our sources says that a KB article on the subject is expected soon.
