Mac OS X 10.4.8 (#12): Reminder: Update device firmware; More problems with Windows services -- fix
Reminder: Update device firmware If you are having issues with external devices -- especially those connected via USB or FireWire -- after updating to Mac OS X 10.4.8, remember to make sure the device(s) firmware is up to date. Updated firmware can generally be obtained from the manufacturer's Web site, or by searching VersionTracker.
MacFixit reader Martin provides a case example:
"Apple made some changes in Mac OS X 10.4.8 that would cause a connected Kodak DC 4800 with firmware 1.0 no longer be available under Image Capture or iPhoto. Solution: Upgrade the firmware of the Kodak DC 4800 to version 1.04. After the upgrade the Kodak DC 4800 will show up again in Image Capture."
More problems with Windows services -- fix Meanwhile, users continue to report issues with accessing Macs from Windows systems via Windows service shares after updating to Mac OS 10.4.8.
MacFixIt reader George Madison writes:
"My office is definitely having this problem; since upgrading the XServe, I've had to stop and restart the Windows service every morning, otherwise people are unable to access the shares - they do show up, but users are told we might not have permission, etc."
In some cases, this issue can be remedied by simply making sure that AppleTalk is turned on in the Network pane of System Preferences. It appears AppleTalk was inadvertently turned off on some systems after application of the Mac OS X 10.4.8 updater.
