Scrappy phone and tablet-maker Huawei is plotting another Nexus 7 rival, if leaked images are to be believed.

The photos above, posted to Chinese-language site 1Pad.cn and spied by Engadget, purportedly show the MediaPad X1, a device that looks to be a palm-stretching slate, with some pleasingly skinny bezels.

The images imply that the X1 may be capable of making phone calls, which would mean it has a SIM-card slot for calls and data on-the-go. That may be a feature reserved for only certain countries however, so we'll have to wait and see whether that's a feature that makes it to the UK.

We can also see a cover, that looks to show a clock widget through a carefully-placed hole. This is highly reminiscent of Samsung's S View cover, which lets you see the time and notifications with just a cheeky glance. I've embedded a video below, should you desire to see it in action.

In the world of Android tablets, Google's Nexus 7 is the gadget to beat. The Big G's tablet is plenty powerful and rather affordable at £200, so Huawei would need to offer plenty of under-the-bonnet grunt and a very low price to tempt us. Fingers crossed, eh?

It's likely we'll get a glimpse at Huawei's upcoming gadgets in just a few days time, at Mobile World Congress -- a mammoth mobile trade show that takes place in Barcelona.

CNET will be on hand to bring you all the news as it happens, so stay tuned, and let me know what you think of the freshly-leaked gadget in the images above.
